In October of 1966 they released their first of 4 consecutive #1 Albums on the Billboard charts, their first LP was #1 for 13 weeks, their follow up was #1 for 18 weeks, their 3rd album certified Double Platinum and their 4th LP featured a double sided 45 release in which both A and B sides hit the top of the Billboard chart………..anyone?

In the Spring of 2010 I saw one of the Northeast best acts perform live for the first time at Gemstones night club in downtown Lowell. Prior to that night, Yes; I was fan of their music, and I wasted no time introducing myself to the members of the band as they loaded in and began to set up on the stage, and without totally gushing or acting like a star struck fool I did my best to make it clear that I was a fan and I'm really looking forward to the show on this night, after all, I was the one responsible for putting them on that stage.

The excitement of finally seeing an act I had been listening to, reading about, while constantly searching the internet for any and all videos and info I could find was about to finally come to fruition, for months anything remotely mentioning the act or its music was something I was looking for, and in just a few minutes they are going to finally perform live right in front of me....Yeah, you could say I was a fan. And having them perform in my hometown was a real treat, not only for me but for everyone who was lucky enough to be in that room.

As people coming out for the show that night were heading up the stairs I greeted many of them at the door, and as they entered the room I wasted no time telling them my thoughts and opinions about the band that will performing in just a few minutes. although i was yet to see them live I had certainly seen and heard enough to know that expectations were high, yes, it was an exciting night for me, and when it was over these guys did not disappoint.

The band hit the stage just after 10pm and wasted no time making it clear to everyone in the room that they came to play, and play they did. I was loving every minute, every second of every note just resonated with me, I stood high in the back of the venue taking it all in, their presence on stage was comparable to any legend or icon I had ever seen, their sound was magnificent, and their stage show was a total polished performance. These guys were total pros and in my mind, they had no equals. It was a performance that just ramped up to the point where one would start to think that the room, the stage, the sound system, or even the windows were going to give out, collapse, and blow under stress. The venue had never seen anything like this before, and I couldn't believe it. In this broken down sad excuse for a room, this band, for one night, created an atmosphere that I have not seen happen in that club since, and I'm convinced that it will never happen there again.

"These guys are awesome!", and as they played through a 50min set I often found myself shouting those words to anyone who came within an earshot of where I was standing. I was in total awe of what I was seeing and hearing.

They ended their set in fine fashion with an epic and anthemic tune from their first CD that is worthy of anyone's top 10 list... I was overjoyed, exhausted, and elated. And while they gathered their gear, paused on the edge of the stage, or approached the bar for a drink, I made it clear to all of them what a great show they had just delivered in a club that didn't deserve them.

For days and weeks following that memorable night in Downtown Lowell I would continue to tell people all about what I had witnessed, but I would always end my story with "ya gotta see them for yourself! I just can't explain it!" on one occasion I recall trying to explain the bands performance akin to a UFO sighting; "I saw something, it was pretty amazing, but I'm not quite sure what it actually was, and I'm afraid people will think I'm crazy if I continue to talk about it" and I guess that's the best description of the band I could give to anyone who hasn't seen them.

Since that spring night and moving forward, I have seen them perform live on 6 different occasions and in 6 different cities and every performance just as spectacular as that one back in the spring of 2010. And while attending one of their live shows a few weeks ago I was approached by a young woman at the event who told me she had never seen the act perform live, I responded by telling her this; "I'm jealous, I wish I was seeing them for the first time"

Their music screams radio ready, their stage show is polished to near perfection, and they're one of the best live acts I have ever seen.

Great words from Joe Coughlin in this months Noise Magazine about The Luxury, "Every song sounds like a hit" ......he's got that right!

"The Luxury strafe the joint with a set of loud, hard [insert: grand, sweeping, soaring, breathless, heart-stopping, etc.] ultra-melodic (and harmonic) rock that’s meticulously arranged, full of surprises, tight as a straitjacket, and delivered via pneumatic drill. The hipsters who think they’re “too mainstream” don’t deserve them anyway. Mainstream is for lazy minds. The Luxury are accessible---big difference---in ways that offer something for nearly everyone. Their sound could overwhelm a stadium, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it does, sooner than later. Every song sounds like a hit. I tried to think of a remote comparison, and there ain’t one. That says it all". pg. 33.

and now for the bad news from the members of Boston's best band!

After a stellar 2008/2009 (and a million thank yous to everyone involved and the subsequent downturn, it's time for a break. We're not saying we won't be back, but in order for us to eventually return with the power and perspective that the songs (and our friendships) deserve, this little (or big) vacation from "the band" needs to happen. So, in classic Lux style, we're throwing one hell of a going-away party for ourselves, surrounded by our friends, family and co-conspirators from the last 5 years. A few details need to be ironed out yet, but we've landed the location - The Lizard Lounge, one of our favorite places to play despite us being a bit (read: way too f-ing) loud for the joint. And we've landed most of the music - final details to emerge in June. We hope you all can make it - the room sells out at about 100, so we strongly recommend buying advance tickets, which will be posted here when available.

Above all, thanks to all of you for your support for the past five years, especially those of you who cheered us on in the '09 Rumble and helped us play Boston Garden, whether you were local or thousands of miles away. And keep in mind, we're going away so we can eventually come back.

Bad Axe Michigan calling Air Traffic Controller

The Boston based band "Air Traffic Controller" is officially confirmed to headline the 2011 Hatchet Festival in Bad Axe, Michigan, on Saturday night June 11th, 2011.
The band has been gaining more and more attention in the New England area, with two recently sold out shows at Club Passim, a double bill at The Bull Run with Liz Longley last February (that literally brought the house down) and along with getting the call to support such nationally touring acts the likes of; Ferraby Lionheart, The Alternate Routes, and Good Old War, leaving no doubt that Air Traffic Controller is certainly a band on the rise in the regional music scene as it continues to ride the success of its debut CD.

While the album’s title track “The One” is currently charting on many college radio stations across the country and most recently Abercrombie and Fitch has purchased the song "Can't Let Go" adding it to their in store play list worldwide, but it is track 3 off the band’s CD that has come to the attention of both the city of Bad Axe and the planning committee for The 2011Hatchet Festival.

A modest hit that is gathering quite the fan base in the “thumb” of the Wolverine state (and for obvious reasons), Track 3 on the CD is a song called "Bad Axe MI” a 3 min track that tells the story of a band called Bad Axe that came to Boston with a dream like so many others but quickly found themselves disillusioned by the “myth” of the Boston music scene. A song prefaced by Air Traffic Controller frontman Dave Munro; as “a true story and a break up song about a band called Bad Axe from a place called Bad Axe MI.” That band (Bad Axe) which spent quite a bit of in time living in the Boston area, now based in Nashville, will be returning home to Michigan to perform w/ Air Traffic Controller along with local artist Nathan Schock at this year’s Hatchet Festival.

It is a reunion and a homecoming, with small town history at stake, on June 11th Boston sends one of its best live acts to Bad Axe Michigan to not only represent one of the country’s most thriving music scenes but to also deliver the message loud and clear; This Boston Music Scene is no myth.

The Luxury @ The Sky Box

The British are coming!! Well, not really. Boston rockers The Luxury will be taking their polished brit pop sound and stage show to The Skybox Restaurant and Sports Bar in Tewksbury on Thursday March 31st @ 10pm. The last band to win the WBCN Rock N Roll Rumble, nominated for a Boston Music Award (Best Rock band), and in the summer of 2009 The Luxury found themselves sharing the stage with the Grammy award winning act Coldplay; Opening their show at the TD Bank North Garden.

And while so many comparisons to The Luxury have been made over the last few years liking the band's sound to other brit-poppers such as Tears for Fears, Squeeze, and Stereophonics, a comparison that even front man for the band Jason Dunn affirms when he says; "that association does not bother me in the slightest" . The Luxury has certainly made their own mark on the New England music scene and is currently listed in Music Connection Magazine as "One of the best unsigned acts in the country" and on Thursday Night, March 31st at The Sports Bar in Tewksbury you are all invited to see come see why. The Skybox is located at 553 Main Street on Rt. 38 in Tewksbury, admission to the 21plus event is Free, and opening the show is MTV Nominee Air Traffic Controller.

Malden native and founding member of the popular indie rock band Air Traffic Controller; Dave Munro has recently launched a "Kickstarter" campaign in the hopes of rallying fans to support and fund the release of Air Traffic Controller's 2nd album. "The project is an ambitious one and those involved in the recording process are standing by, waiting and hoping for fans from our hometown and beyond to answer the call" says Dave. 2010 Boston Music Award winner; Bleu, who produced the first Air Traffic Controller debut, The One, has signed on again to produce their full length follow-up, but the possibility of this record ever seeing the light of day, hinges on the success of this Kickstarter.

An "Alternate" Route

On Friday Night, Nov 19th, the Bridgeport Connecticut based indie rock band The Alternate Routes will be making a slight course correction as they wrap up their 2010 nation wide tour. The band which was originally scheduled to appear at Harpers Ferry in Allston Mass. w/ the Australian act The Kin on the above date, but a few weeks back the unexpected announcement was made that on October 31st, 2010, Harper's Ferry will be closing its doors for good after 4 decades of rocking the last T stop on the Greenline.

But as they say "the show must go on", so on that note; Friday Night, Nov 19th at 8pm, The Alternate Routes and The Kin will be taking their canceled Harper's show to Gemstones Night Club in Downtown Lowell.

I got a few calls yesterday during the show, while most were props for the live act that i had in; 25Pearl.

I got one call late in the show. The caller said this: "hey man, that song you opened the show with? who was that and what was the name of that song, it was so freaking cool"

Horns O' Plenty!

Something magical happens to the music when a horn is introduced to the mix, it just makes the song soar above the standard...it penetrates, and is guaranteed just make you move!

a little over a year ago i walked into TOAD (Porter Square, Cambridge) to see a live act called Melvern Taylor and his Fabulous Meltones, i had been a fan of the music for quite a while and i finally managed the opportunity to go see the band perform....that magic moment i speak of happened halfway into the acts live set when from the middle of the room a die hard fan produced a trumpet from the table she was sitting at and simply started playing along.......Magic! The mood of the room, the applause, and there i was with nothing left to do but move to the music!

a few weeks ago another incredibly talented act; Jen Kearney and The Lost Onion performed a similar magic trick, after a couple songs into the set at the corner of the stage.....i hear that magic sound again, and the room just starts moving!

last week i got my hands on a CD called "Neon Lights" by a NYC based band called Frank Viele and The Manhattan Project, the music is a great mix of blues, rock, with a lil pop. but there are moments in a few tracks when the horns transfer the song into something bigger and better, and for those interested in hearing it, i don't think you need to dig any deeper than track 1 ("Somebody Else") on the CD to understand what i am talking about. more magic

One of the oldest instruments ever found dates back to 7,000BC, (a wooden flute) but the Trumpet wasn't all that far behind dating back to around 2000BC, and one of the oldest Trumpets ever discovered was actually found in King Tut's Tomb!

Even back then they knew! The horn has magical properties!

On Saturday Night February 27th at Gemstones Nightclub in Downtown Lowell "A Local Anesthetic; Live" and Stellar Productionz kicks off its first event of the year with 3 of the area's best bands coming together for a night of awesome live music. and for the price of a bottle of beer at many of the Boston area night clubs you can buy yourself a ticket for this one!

Taking the stage at 9pm is "Audrey Can't Die". 2009 was a busy year for ACD , one band member married, another saw the birth of his first child, and late in the year the band replaced their drummer. but the act still found time to release their third CD "Waving at Parked Cars" to rave reviews. In July of 09 they dropped in on WMBR Radio for a live on air set, in September ACD appeared as one of the featured acts at the MIT Fred Fest (an annual outdoor concert on the college campus) in Cambridge Mass, and late in December the band performed on the LTC television show "A Local Anesthetic" Yes! 2009 was certainly a busy year for "Audrey". And as fans now await the release of their "Remix and Rarities" EP due this summer.... Saturday night Feb 27th at Gemstones in Downtown Lowell; ."Audrey Can't Die" will finally return to the Lowell stage!

Following "Audrey" is another very popular act that also had a very busy year in 2009. Air Traffic Controller; nominated by MTV as one of Boston's Best Breakout Artist for 2009 and listed by bostonspotlight. com as one of Boston's 10 best bands to watch in 2010 ATC spent much of 2009 playing to bigger and bigger crowds as the year came to a close, and many of the tracks from their debut CD "The One" released in December of 2009 can be heard on quite a few of the popular FM radio stations in the greater Boston area. Air Traffic Controller is definitely a band on the edge of break out status at the national level. And on Saturday night Feb 27th not only will this 5 piece act deliver all the songs that have brought them to them to that point but they will also be bringing with them a string quartet to guarantee an incredibly full sound and a must see stage show as 9 incredibly talented musicians take the stage and roll though a very impressive original set list.

Closing the night will be hometown favorite and Lowell's own; Speakermute. A band Metronome Magazine calls; "One of the most original Boston bands performing today". Speakermute will be celebrating in front of the hometown crowd the release of their 2nd CD which at this moment is still untitled. over the last few months the band has not only been putting the finishing touches on their new CD but the band has also been performing at a number of area venues that they have modestly promoted and at times called "tune ups" in an attempt to be ready for their live show on Feb 27th

So there you have it music lovers, 3 amazing bands all on the verge of commercial success and all on one stage for one night at Gemstones Night Club in the heart of Downtown Lowell, the club opens at 7:30pm and tickets at the door the night of the show are just 5 dollars!

A "Gem" of a Show

The Downtown Lowell music scene will shine tomorrow night (Dec 4th) at Gemstones Night Club when two of the area’s most popular acts finally come together to perform on the same stage. Voted by MTV as “Boston’s Best Breakout Artist for 2009” Gentlemen Hall will be opening the show for one of Lowell’s best known and most original bands; Jen Kearney and The Lost Onion. While both of these acts have gathered an impressive following of fans all over the northeast and on a number of occasions have played many of the same venues up and down the east coast, it appears that sharing the stage on the same night is something that just never seemed to materialize, until tomorrow night.

And it is only fitting that for one night in a city regarded as a cultural melting pot that it is right here in the center of Lowell Massachusetts where their paths will finally cross.

Jen Kearney and the Lost Onion and Gentlemen Hall are two amazingly talented groups that have taken the rock, funk, and soul genre’s of popular music and fused them together creating two very separate but equal original sounds and styles while always staying true to the R & B influence which their music is heavily rooted in. While Jen has earned the nicknamed by many of her fans as “The Soul of Lowell”. The Gentlemen have been equally dubbed and embrace the label of “Robo-funk” by many of their fans that turn out where ever and whenever they appear.

Earlier this year Jen Kearney and the Lost Onion released their long awaited and much anticipated 3rd CD “The Year of the Ox” The CD not only became an immediate hit with fans but it has also received impressive reviews by many in the music industry. The band also got the attention of many of the area’s popular FM radio stations with her music being featured and talked about on 92.5 WXRV, and 100.7 WZLX, while back on Oct 29th the band performed live on WMBR 88.1 FM in Cambridge.

This year also saw the release of the debut EP from Gentlemen Hall, and on top of the MTV “Breakout Artist” award they received in September, and just prior to that Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream chain introduced the Gentlemen Hall Smoothie at many of its Boston locations with proceeds being donated to The Community Music Center of Boston, and Ourstage.com says this; “Gentlemen Hall brings audiences to the dance floor with their deep bass lines, and all around funky sound. But it’s their combination of Jamiroquai-esque rhythms and Marvin-Gaye-vibing sexual tension that sets them above Beantown’s best.”

both cases are a clear indications that Jen Kearney and the Lost Onion and Gentlemen Hall are two acts on the fast track to recording success. With driving vocals, multi-layered instrumentation , and an incredible stage presence both Jen Kearney and the Lost Onion along with Gentlemen Hall this Friday night at Gemstones is sure to be a show the music scene will be talking about for quite some time. Getting the night started at 9pm will be another up and coming local band with a similar influenced sound called Ashland's Attic

Gemstones Night Club is located in Downtown Lowell at 105 Market Street right above the Blue Shamrock Restaurant and Pub, and with a 300plus capacity, Private VIP seating, and a state of the art sound system, Gemstones in Lowell is truly one of the Mill Cities premiere concert venues.

Tickets for the 21plus event are available at the door the day of the show and are just $10. A far cry from some of the overpriced Boston venues and with plenty of public parking just across the street from the club a hassle free and inexpensive night on the town just can’t get any easier.

The band is called "The Great Escape" and they are a Journey cover band.......i'm not a fan of the original band, but i'm also not blind to the fact that Journey certainly left their mark on the AOR of the 80's....and based on the numbers from their most recent world tour with replacement front man Arnel Pineda, Journey is still quite the popular draw.

Kudos to Joe Graham, Lowell resident and host of WMBR's Thursday afternoon radio show Droppin Knowledge, for all his efforts to support and promote the Lowell music scene which seems to be thriving everywhere except Lowell. Weekly guests from the area have included Jen Kearney, producer Bob Nash, Audrey Can't Die, and up and coming artist /songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Leo Blais. Lowell Rocks (outside the city limits)

It’s no mistake why some of Lowell Massachusetts best musical acts are playing anywhere but in the city they call home. The clubs in Lowell just don’t want them and these same clubs are also not interested in bringing in acts that are clearly on the verge of reaching break out status among music fans on a national level, much like some of their talented Lowell counterparts.

This is the impression I’m under after contacting the booking managers who represent some of the Lowell area nightclubs that supposedly pride themselves on the level of talent they bring in every weekend. However, one reply from an individual responsible for booking bands in a Lowell club was this; “I’ve been booking bands in Lowell for the last 10 years and I gotta tell ya, Lowell is about 6 months behind on the current music scene”.

Well, as a lifelong Lowell resident and a huge fan of the local music scene I simply don’t agree with that statement. But what I do believe is this; the individual who made that statement to me is clearly the only one who is 6 months behind and he is also single handedly doing this city, the amazing music coming out of this city, and the music that is trying to come into this city a terrible disservice. It’s perfectly understandable to be unaware of all the local talent that exists these days, and as a host of a weekly radio show that features nothing but the music of the local scene, I am constantly inundated with mp3’s, CD, and press kits sent to me from bands and promoters in the area, and in all honesty there are literally hundreds that I have not heard of, but that does not stop me from listening. In fact, I want to listen. I could never discount an act or completely ignore a band just because I have yet to hear of them. But this seems to be what others in the business of booking bands into the night clubs of Lowell seem to be doing and they must cease and desist immediately.

I truly believe that many Lowell bands would like nothing more than to play in Lowell for their hometown fans. But when those who do the booking for the clubs in this great city make statements like the aforementioned, I’m afraid they are simply giving these bands no other option than to pack their gear and hit the road. Totally ignoring the music of a band from outside the city that is interested in a Lowell gig isn’t a wise idea either, and it send a message that spreads like wild fire among local artist that Lowell is simply no place to be on a Saturday night. Until these club owners get it that those they have asked or hired to fill their clubs are 6 month behind the scene the sad fact will remain, and Lowell will continue to feature nothing but karaoke and cover bands. And if you ask me, that is something which is about six years behind the scene.

So, if you’re looking to see and hear some of the best bands that Lowell Massachusetts has to offer or you were hoping for a chance to catch an act in Lowell from another city that would love to play here... I’m afraid you’ll have to do what everyone else does; go anywhere but Lowell to see them.

in a nutshell

at 7pm Fortran started things off with an awesome and very updated cover of the Nancey Sinatra classic "These Boots were Made for Walkin" at 8pm Audrey Can't Die turned in a great set (their first live performance in months) and they didn't miss a beat, but it was Leo Blais at 9pm who brought them all to their feet as he closed out a flawless performance. and Gentlemen Hall pulled out all the stops and ended it all four and half hours later after literally busting the stage with a killer cover of "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai.

those who saw it, those who performed, and those who made it happen will be talking about it for quite some time.

This is gonna be awesome!!!!

I met with an acoustic duo today called Leathers and Graham, they are going to appear live on the show on Sept 24th at 4pm and will be preforming a few Beatles songs...between the two of them, i don't believe there is a Beatles song they don't know how to play/sing, i sat in on their rehearsal today and it was amazing.....hearing Leathers play and sing "Mother Natures Son" while Graham was belting out "She's a Woman" just floored me, and when they both stood up to cover the song "Two of Us" i knew then and there that the "Droppin Knowledge" show that will air on Sept 24th at 4pm was long over due!

I deem them the greatest rock' n roll band that ever existed, we will never see anything like them again.

30 years after the Beatles had broken up, they were the highest grossing act of the year in record/CD/Video sales, and 40 years after they had broken up (again, for the 30th time, as individuals or a group) they appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

The Beatles are timeless.

my wife was named after a Beatles song (the Grammy winning song of the year in 1966), my 12 year old daughter knows more about the Beatles than any 12 year old girl ever should, and my 20 year old son can't wait for this;

AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and Queen were all once considered Heavy Metal but according to the devout headbangers of the genre' this is not true.

it appears that there is a fine line between what is Heavy Metal and what is Hard Rock......bands like Tool and Kiss, where do they stand?

if none of the aforementioned acts are considered Heavy Metal, then what is?

Caught an Elvis impersonator a few years ago, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Beatles, AC/DC, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd....I've seen bands cover all these acts too....On three occasions i saw a Led Zeppelin cover band called "Physical Graffiti" all these acts were fun, most of them looked and play the part really well......

but last night at The House of Blues in Boston, Drew and I caught a 6 man 1 woman act called "Get the Led Out", a two-an-a-half-hour rock n roll show featuring one Led Zeppelin song after another.

it was without a doubt one of the best live shows i have ever seen!
